Stories That Warm the Palate and Soul: Discover the Autumn Flavours of Southern Croatia

Some flavours take us back to places we know and love. Others make us want to explore somewhere new. This autumn, we’re heading to Dalmatia in search of both.

When the summer crowds fade, Dalmatia carries on at its own pace. Market stalls brim with seasonal produce, lunches linger well into the afternoon, and over a glass of good wine, time seems to slow down. It’s an inviting season to explore the region’s food scene, from family-run restaurants keeping age-old recipes alive to contemporary kitchens finding fresh ways to celebrate familiar flavours. And what’s on the plate is only the beginning of the story.

In the Embrace of Dubrovnik’s South

In Dalmatia, a memorable meal often begins long before the first bite. Perhaps with a stroll through a historic old town, a view across a river or an unplanned detour off the main road. On this journey, there will be plenty of reasons to stop along the way.

We begin in Konavle, where Konavoski Dvori Eco Green Restaurant sits amid lush greenery beside the Ljuta River and its historic watermills. The sound of flowing water and the rustic stone setting are just a taste of what’s to come: Nevenka’s legendary chickpea soup, grilled meats, homemade pasta with wild herbs and wines from the surrounding countryside. Here, tradition isn’t simply something you find on the menu. It’s part of everyday life.

But save room for another delicious discovery, because Dubrovnik is only a short drive away.

Tucked among the stone streets of its historic Old Town, Fish Restaurant Proto has been celebrating the city’s culinary heritage for decades. Fresh fish and seafood take centre stage, while the elegant surroundings evoke an era when dining out was an occasion in itself, with no need to check the time or glance at your phone.

From the Centre of the World to Riverside Landscapes

Where better to head next than Split, affectionately known by locals as the centre of the world?

Beside the ancient walls of Diocletian’s Palace, ZOI overlooks Split’s harbour, bringing a contemporary perspective to Mediterranean cuisine.

Here, local ingredients are reimagined through modern culinary techniques. Few dinner settings are quite as captivating as one where nearly 2,000 years of history meet contemporary fine dining.

After the bustle of the city, the peaceful banks of the Cetina River offer a welcome change of pace.

Just outside Omiš, Kaštil Slanica is a family-run restaurant built on the remains of a medieval salt-trading site. Surrounded by emerald-green scenery, it celebrates time-honoured recipes from Dalmatia and its hinterland, bringing together flavours of the sea, river and rugged limestone landscape, complemented by carefully selected wines and olive oils.

One of its most irresistible touches is the aroma of freshly baked bread, prepared daily beneath a traditional peka bell-shaped lid, alongside slow-cooked meat and octopus. What else is on the menu? We’ll leave that for you to discover.

Island Delights Between Sea and Stone

And what would a journey through Dalmatia be without a taste of its islands?

We continue to Murter, where Fine Food Murter, located in the island’s marina, has been developing its own culinary identity since 1994. The menu features seafood specialities alongside meat and vegetarian dishes, while the terrace overlooking the boats is one of those places where lunch can easily turn into a long, leisurely afternoon over another glass of wine.

From Murter, we head to Pag, an island where the bura wind, salt and stone shape both the landscape and the flavours for which it is known.

Nestled among vineyards and olive groves, Boškinac Restaurant is one of Croatia’s recognised fine-dining destinations. Pag lamb, cheese, aromatic herbs and other local ingredients inspire an inventive approach to cooking that gives tradition a contemporary twist. Here, among rocky terrain and grapevines, the seemingly rugged landscape reveals just how much richness it has to offer.

Stories That Don’t Stay at the Table

Six restaurants, six different stories of Dalmatia. From the watermills of Konavle and Dubrovnik’s stone streets to Split’s ancient palace, the banks of the Cetina, Murter’s marina and Pag’s vineyards, each place gives us a different reason to explore.

Autumn is made for journeys like these.

With the summer rush behind us and no need to fit everything into a single day, there’s time to enjoy the little things along the way. Because the best trips aren’t necessarily the ones where we see the most. They’re the ones we come home talking about – with a few favourite flavours already calling us back.
