Summer may be winding down, but in eastern Croatia, the season of good food, great wine and memorable gatherings is only just shifting into a new gear.
From Osijek’s final summer celebrations in late August to the first days of October, Slavonia and Baranja offer plenty of reasons to squeeze in another weekend away.
You can (quite literally) run for a glass of craft beer, cycle through the vineyards of Erdut, try your hand at making traditional fiš, fill your pantry with local delicacies or simply find a good bottle of wine and settle into the slower rhythm of early autumn.
Here’s what’s happening in eastern Croatia over the next few weeks.
From Summer Nights to the Flavours of Slavonia & Baranja
Not quite ready to say goodbye to summer? Save 29 August for Osijek.
Osijek Summer Nights traditionally take over the city on the last Saturdays of June, July and August, transforming its streets, squares, hidden passageways and Drava riverfront into one big open-air summer stage.
From 7 PM to 11 PM, the city comes alive with music, local food and flavours, children’s theatre, dance and cultural performances, sporting events and plenty more.
The best part? You don’t really need a plan. Take a walk along the Drava, stop wherever the atmosphere feels right and simply see where the evening takes you.
And if you’re in the mood for something a little more competitive, the final weekend of August offers another great reason to visit eastern Croatia.
Did You Know Brođanci Has Its Own “Olympics”?
In the picturesque village of Brođanci, near Bizovac, a rather special tradition has been going strong since 1972. Created to preserve the traditional sports, customs and cultural heritage of Slavonia and Baranja, the Old Sports Olympics return for their 52nd edition from 28 to 30 August.
Expect competitions in traditional sports, performances by folklore groups and tamburica ensembles, as well as the Olympic Half Marathon, attracting both professional and recreational runners from Croatia and beyond.
And when the competitions finish, the celebrations certainly don’t.
Saturday and Sunday evenings bring the Olympic Nights, complete with live music, local food and the traditional spectacle of an ox roasting on a spit.
If you want to experience Slavonian traditions at their most authentic – and most lively – this is a good place to start.
Craft Beer, a Little Competition & Plenty of Fiš
September begins with craft beer, good food and another slightly unusual sporting challenge.
The Đakovo Craft Beer Festival, held on 4 and 5 September in Strossmayer Park as part of Đakovo Summer, brings together local craft breweries, beer lovers and anyone looking for a good excuse to spend an evening outdoors.
But simply tasting the beers might be a little too easy.
Enter the Beer Mile: four 400-metre laps, with participants drinking a full glass of beer after each one.
Yes, really. 😊
Expect plenty of cheering, laughter and at least a few stories you’ll probably be retelling with your friends for years to come.
And once you’ve had your fill of craft beer, it’s time for one of the flavours that defines this part of Croatia – fiš.
On 5 September, Beli Manastir hosts Croatia’s largest fiš cooking competition, bringing together more than 200 masters of this traditional spicy river-fish stew.
Cauldrons bubble over open fires, paprika fills the air and every chef seems to have one secret ingredient they’re not quite willing to reveal. But this is about much more than deciding who makes the best fiš. It’s a celebration of local traditions, food and the simple pleasure of gathering around a table.
Always wondered whether you could make a proper Baranja-style fiš yourself?
This might be the year to find out.
Cycle, Sip & Follow the Danube to Erdut
If your idea of a perfect weekend involves earning that first glass of wine, head towards Erdut.
Taking place on 11 and 12 September, Wine & Bike Erdut brings together everything that makes this corner of the Danube special: vineyards, wine cellars, cycling, art, theatre, music and, naturally, plenty of good wine.
The concept is simple. Get on a bike, explore, taste and experience the Erdut wine region at a pace that allows you to actually notice it.
One of this year’s highlights comes on the first evening, with a special musical experience featuring Gibonni – “VERSI I NOTE”.
Picture this: the Danube stretching below, vineyards all around, a glass of local wine in hand and live music setting the mood.
A pretty perfect way to spend a September evening, wouldn’t you agree?
Fill the Pantry, Then Raise a Glass in Baranja
By late September, the flavours begin to change – and so does the landscape.
From 25 to 27 September, the Autumn Fair takes over the Economic Centre of Osijek-Baranja County, bringing together local and international producers with a particular focus on regional delicacies and traditional products.
For travellers who believe one of the best ways to understand a destination is through what it grows, makes and eats, this is the place to be.
Pick up a few edible souvenirs along the way – or simply use the opportunity to stock the pantry for the colder months ahead.
And don’t leave the region too quickly. 😊
That same weekend, on 25 and 26 September, the village of Zmajevac hosts one of Baranja’s most popular celebrations – the Wine Marathon, locally known as the Bor Maraton.
And despite the name, speed really isn’t the point here.
Wine tastings and competitions are accompanied by concerts, creative workshops, fairs, exhibitions, performances and traditional folklore, all set among the surduci – Zmajevac’s distinctive sunken lanes – and the wine cellars carved into the Baranja hills.
And Then There’s HeadOnEast!

From 2 to 4 October, Osijek’s historic Baroque quarter, Tvrđa, once again becomes the setting for HeadOnEast, a festival celebrating the hedonistic side of eastern Croatia.
For several days, local food, wine, music, art and entertainment take over one of Osijek’s most atmospheric neighbourhoods, bringing together many of the things that make this region worth discovering in the first place.
Consider it the grand finale to a journey from late summer into early autumn – or simply another excuse to discover a new favourite wine and enjoy it in good company.
Autumn Is Coming…
The seasons may be changing, but memorable weekends certainly aren’t over.
From evening walks along the Drava and craft beer in Đakovo to fiš in Beli Manastir, cycling through Erdut’s vineyards, wandering between the wine cellars of Zmajevac and soaking up the food, wine, music and atmosphere of HeadOnEast in Osijek’s historic Tvrđa, the next few weeks show just how many different ways there are to spend a weekend in eastern Croatia.
Better yet, you don’t have to choose just one.
Combine a few stops, stay for two or three nights and turn an ordinary weekend into a spontaneous road trip through Slavonia and Baranja.
And between all those festivals, tastings and events, leave a little room to embrace the local way of taking things “pomalo” – slowly and at your own pace.
